Collections

A collection contains datasets and other collections, and sometimes helper objects like places and instruments. Datasets in turn may contain other datasets. All datasets and other objects are member of at least one collection

Times, places, ...

TimesPlaces is for datasets ABOUT times or places, e.g. meteo data, NOT for lab experiments or publication dates.

What is this?

3TU.Datacentrum
3TU.Datacentrum stores datasets from the 3TU.Federation of Technical Universities of the Netherlands.

OPeNDAP
Some datasets reside on our OPeNDAP server. This has certain benefits for data formats like NetCDF (see right column) or hdf-5. These benefits include: view of metadata, slices and subsamples of data, aggregation of datasets, access with APIs (Java, Python, Matlab, ...). But all these datasets are also accessible through our regular website, with the appropriate links to profit from these benefits.

Data formats & tech stuff

NetCDF
Many datasets are formatted as NetCDF. For some NetCDF datasets, we also provide plain text and xml representations known as CDL and NcML, respectively, and, if the dataset is not too big or complex, also simple CSV and Excel versions. netCDF logo
Other formats
We do not restrict ourselves to a list of allowed formats; however, we strongly encourage the use of open (non-proprietary) and well-known formats.
Packaging: Bagit+zip
Datasets may be stored as a compressed bagit archive. Bagit is a format to add basic metadata and integrity checks to an arbitrary directory tree with data files. This tree and the extra information is then zipped into one file.
Linked data
RDF/XML links on each page point to ORE Resource maps. These resource maps describe the contents and links to other resources in a way that enables integration in Semanic Web applications. ORE logo
