Collections A collection is a coherent set of datasets from a production and organizational point of view. All collections except Miscellaneous datasets contain series of similar datasets. All datasets are part of a collection. | Studies A study is a coherent set of datasets from a research point of view. The datasets themselves may be of different origin or type. It may coincide with a research project. Most studies are defined for multiple datasets. You will usually NOT find 'stand-alone' datasets here. | Times Starting point for exploring absolute time as a dimension of the underlying datasets. This means that you will find only datsets in which absolute time is a relevant variable, e.g. meteorological data, NOT typical (reproducible) laboratory experiments. | Places Starting point for exploring geographic location as a dimension of the underlying datasets. This means that you will find only datsets in which geographic location is a relevant variable, e.g. meteorological data, NOT typical (reproducible) laboratory experiments. | ||
About data formats
Most of the datasets (but not all!) are formatted as NetCDF.
Additionally, we provide plain text and xml representations of NetCDF known as CDL
and NcML, respectively.
For those who are not familiar to NetCDF, we also provide simple CSV and Excel versions for datasets that are not too big or complex.
Other datasets are either stored in their original format or as a compressed bagit archive.
